John Solomon had an interesting take on why Dan Bongino punched out of his Feeb job. Trump told him his talents were being wasted in that slot, and that he was needed back behind his microphone in the war of Hearts and Minds (paraphrasing).

There are reasons and there are excuses. That would be classified as a reason, if true, but does not rise to the level of an excuse unless the President publishes it on his social feed.

The only other reason that might qualify as an excuse (exoneration) is if the President told Bongino dismantling the FBI was not going to happen. And Trump would have to kiss the paper on that one too, for it to be an excuse.
